Getting Building Codes Right:

Lessons learnt on the road to a Performance Based Approach

11th of December 2013 – 5 pm CET

Significant energy improvements can only be achieved by focusing on the overall performance of the building and the balance between the individual elements of the building. Despite the strong awareness of the need for such an approach, the practical knowledge about “how to” develop and implement these standards is often missing.

Based on the lessons learnt from the Policy Comparative Tool, GBPN is organising a series of webinars on the “How To” of Building Energy Code Development. The second webinar in this series focused on importance of a performance based approach to energy code design if ambitious energy targets are to be achieved.

GBPN invited Jim Edelson form the New Buildings Institute to open the event by discussing the importance of a performance approach and the current progress in the US. Code developers from Austria and Massachusetts (U.S.) shared their first hand experiences of implementing performance based building codes. Speakers explained the background context that has facilitated the adoption of such an approach, including political context, market conditions and technical capacity.

Speakers:

  • Opening Words: Niamh McDonald – Global Buildings Performance Network
  • Overview of Performance Based Approach: Jim Edelson – New Buildings Institute
  • Experiences from Massachusetts: Ian Finlayson – Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources
  • Experiences from Austria: Christiane Egger – Deputy Manager OÖ Energiesparverband and Manager of Oekoenergie Cluster
