Dr. Hanny Berchmans

Director of Advance Energy System in USAID Sustainable Energy for Indonesia’s Advancing Resilience (SINAR) Program

Dr. Hanny Berchmans is the director of Advance Energy System in USAID Sustainable Energy for Indonesia’s Advancing Resilience (SINAR) Program, where he leads clean energy project programmes. His clients include renewable energy developers, investors, banks, financial institutions, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR), PT. PLN (Persero), Financial Services Authority (OJK), National Planning Agency (BAPPENAS), provincial and local governments, and other state own enterprises.

Hanny has been in the field since 1988. Until 2011, he worked with the Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT). In the meantime, from 2000 to 2004, he was undertaking energy-related research projects in collaboration with TU Eindhoven in the Netherlands. He was also a researcher in clean energy at the Advance Institute Science and Technology and Gunma University in Japan from 2005 to 2011. In 2011, Hanny joined the US-based Tetra Tech, and since then, he has been managing the clean energy project development activities for various USAID programs in Indonesia.

His career highlights include the Indonesia Clean Energy Development (ICED), the Green Prosperity – Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Indonesia, and Sustainable Energy for Indonesia’s Advancing Resilience (SINAR). Hanny’s primary areas of expertise encompass fossil fuels, energy conservation, new and renewable energies, building automation, project planning, and project management. So far, he has delivered or helped with the delivery of above 320 renewable energy projects, including biofuel, biomass, biogas, hydro, solar, and wind power plant projects. In academia, Hanny has published several scholarly works and supervised over 150 student projects.

Hanny holds a PhD in Chemical and Environmental Engineering from Gunma University (2009), an MSc in computing science from Eindhoven University of Technology (2004), and an MEng in Mechanical Engineering from Bandung Institute of Technology (1998). He is based in Indonesia.
